“there’s a chance” I’m in hell. Need your help.. For realz..

Need some help.. Seriously.. let’s call it Market research

I was going to do a poll on FB but I have too many caveats..  Please comment/respond as HONESTLY as possible!!  I want your feedback on this…

IF you purchased a “there’s a chance this is vodka” Water bottle or if you have intentions of doing so in the future… I’m talking to you!      I’m working financials and need to streamline this process.. it’s killing me!

Bottom Line:  I shipped 3 fucktons of bottles from October til today.  That is a lot of fucktons.  I want to keep the price at $15 if possible and not raise it.  HOWEVER.. the single bottle orders are killing me in time, supplies, labels, printer ink, etc.   I am going to have to raise the prices for ALL bottles OR institute a 2 bottle minimum for orders.

**** NOTE—  “there’s a chance this is vodka”  is a Hot Mess Mom Registered Trademark. Legally, no one else can print or distribute this slogan on ANY drink-ware anywhere in the US.  Also note– trademarking is not super cheap.

Shipping is $6.95 for up to 3 items.   IF  there was a 2 bottle minimum, would you choose NOT to purchase at all or to purchase two bottles?  (transaction total from $23.00  to $39.00)

As I cannot keep these bottles in stock, there is currently NO price-break for bulk orders until a QTY of 24.

So.. basically.. I need to decide to raise the price per bottle to $17.50 + shipping OR keep at $15 but require a minimum of 2 bottles per order.

Please Please Please give me your honest opinions and feedback (without being bitchy).   And again.. NOTE. I am a one woman show.  I do everything myself.  There were less than 12 order or shipping errors and/or discrepancies for the last 1200 orders.  In 100% of these instances, not only have I corrected the error regardless of fault (10 of the 12 issues have been USPS related.. 2 were totally my fault), I send extra goodies to compensate for the inconvenience.   I never want to stop doing that.   But I need to figure out how to make it a win/win situation.

So.. here’s your chance.. tell me honestly..  (and nicely because I am pretty fucking exhausted)…  what do you think?

I think I would just raise the price for the one. Perhaps, you could offer a 2 for one price as well for those who want to order packages. I like giving options! Keeping it under $20 pre shipping is still really a great price. Don’t beat yourself up over this. It’s your business. If someone gives you shit about it, tell them to drink a little vodka before they shop online. They are getting a great quality class for lesst han $20. If they are pissed, send them to Ikea. xoxo

    1. Hot Mess Mom says:

thank you! I do diff. pricing on the koozies and cups.. but the wine glasses and bottles are different.. Not nearly as much margin… As an online shopper– the $2.50 diff really wouldn’t make any difference to you? If not.. that’s the way to go for me… it would solve a multitude of problems..

  2. I would be more likely to purchase 1 with the 2.50 hike than have to purchase two. My husband stalks my spending like it is his full time job so it is easier for me to have two innocent transactions instead of one larger one.

    1. Hot Mess Mom says:

see! that’s super helpful.. I LOVE keeping shit as low as possible.. and I think $15 is a super reasonable “fun money” purchase.. I’ve been fighting raising it.. but if the consensus is “no difference”.. that would make my world so much easier..

  3. Janis says:

My opinion is if you are buying 1 . Than you know at least 1 friend who would love ind.. I mean you hang out with those people right.. A multiple purchase minimum is fine . I bought 3 but will buy more.. It’s the drunk friends I hang out with …

    1. Hot Mess Mom says:

SEE!! that’s what I was thinking!!! but i’d say at least 70% of my orders are for single bottles.. including those shipped internationally where they pay $12.95 for shipping.. for one bottle! if I was paying that much to ship, I’d order the max!! but that is Not the case at all..

  4. Amelia says:

I would totally have still bought them for $17.50. Maybe offer the $15 price on orders of 3 or more?? They are awesome btw :)

    1. Hot Mess Mom says:

ah!! Thank you! I do love them.. And they are GOOD bottle, right? ;)

      1. Janis says:

It is a really good bottle……Not cheap or flimsy… Love the straw too. I dont have to tilt the bottle to .. that makes drinking easier lol.. and mine has the purple and i love purple..

  5. Buy two for $30 or $19.50 for one. Mark up the individual price to make it less appealing. Po’ folk like me will see the “deal” and buy two. Or was that not the question?

  6. Julie says:

I’ve been ogling that bottle for ages. I lurve it. BUT, I’m that person who won’t spend $$ on shit that I want but don’t need. Hey, I’ve got 3 boys who think sneakers are bike brakes and that pants are just shorts waiting to happen!

That said, I’d still pay more for one than have to buy two (even though I know plenty of people who’d love this). It’s my inner cheapskate I guess, even though I can spend with the best of them. Have I waffled enough? Are you super-pissed with my wishy-washy-ness yet? I haven’t had anything to drink tonight yet. That might be the problem.

    1. Hot Mess Mom says:

you are EXACTLY who I am talking to.. for realz. now go have a martini and send me your addy… you’re getting a bottle on the house .. so there!! ;)

  7. They are super good bottles. I use mine daily and will need more soon.

  8. Cara says:

I think you should just raise the price to 17.50. 1. I don’t think the price increase is dramatic and by increasing it to $17.50 instead of $19.95 sends a message to your customers that you care about keeping the price down and not raping them for every penny just because they have become so popular. 2. I think the 2 minimum is too complicated. In that I mean there are plenty of fucktards who will not understand or even begin to grasp the concept of WHY there is a 2 minimum and will just bitch. Honestly, had you not explained your reasoning and I had been drinking I would be one of those fucktards. By the way, I love the word fucktards now :-) 3. From a business perspective I think you should increase the price but for only as much as needed. 4. And since I really, really want one of those bottles but I’m waiting until after the holidays and I just felt so bad for you with all the orders you should let me buy one for $15. Yes I said it. Love your blog!

    1. Hot Mess Mom says:

i have 40 left for “incidentals”.. in case there were issues.. email me your addy. I’ll invoice you at $15 and get you one out asap :) thank you so much for the insight and support!!

  9. Bridget says:

Raise your price for one. I bought 4 and have to carefully pick which 3 of one of my friends gets one of these bottles of awesomeness for Xmas. I have a feeling I will be ordering these for upcoming birthday gifts throughout the coming year, which, in the past, I would go out and drop $25 easily on Starbizucks gift cards and shit. Much rather buy one of your vodka bottles instead! Remember, you are not a charity. This is a business and you need to be making money and don’t feel guilty about it! GO HMM!! :-)

  10. Cara says:

$15 price for 3 or more is a better idea than the minimum of 2!! Not sure how that would work on the financial side.

  11. E. says:

While I have not bought anything…mostly because I’m a slacker, I would go with raising the price for one. It’s much easier on your end to collect an extra $2.50 than to pack an extra bottle. >.< Those of us who have followed for a while totally get it–parent or not (esp. those who are parents). You bust your ass–you deserve an extra $2.50 for all your hard work. :-D And I agree with Cara–people will complain about why there is a 2 bottle min, but they will pay the extra $$ to get just one.

  12. Joy says:

I would say either one. I bought two when I ordered mine, but I would have paid 17.50 for one as well! You rock and so does your website!!! From one Floridian to another!!!

  13. Kelly B says:

I have just recently started reading your blog and just saw this on pinterest today!!! I am totally going to buy one after Christmas!

I am going through Grad School for my MBA and I just took a marketing class. I learned that you should have a price that ends in a 9. For suckers- like me- psychologically, it signals to us that it is a discount! So, instead of $17.50- I would go up to $17.99 or even $17.59. Just my two cents. It probably doesn’t even make sense!

  14. Jackie says:

I agree with what “Nothing but a G thang” said earlier. I can always justify in my mind (as well as my husband) with a deal like 2 for $30 or something like that. I have yet to get around to making a purchase. They have gone from nice to have but now a need to have. I would love to brandish one at work so all my minions would be guessing. Ah, I guess I’ll have to just get one or two for myself and call it a Valentine’s or anniversary gift or some bull shit like that so my hubs doesn’t question it.

  15. Janis says:

I really like the 17.50each for one and then 15.00each for orders of more than one.. makes everyone happy… and i love to think i am getting a bargain..

  16. Melinda R says:

I would raise the price of one.

  17. eileen says:

I love how we all are rationalizing this shit with how we can spend the money without the hubs giving us a bunch of bullshit—– are we ALL married to my husband or what? I would be MORE likely to spend 17.50 on 1 just because i only alot myself 25.00/wk to spend on wants not needs so i could justify it a little better.

  18. Kelly Banks says:

I ordered my bottles ages ago but for my next order – I would say $17.50 per bottle and then a price break at 3.

    1 – $17.50
    2 – $35.00
    3 – $45.00

  19. Kristi says:

I am with Julie! I have also been oogling…but I am so cheap these days. I keep talking about them with my friends, in fact, but I still have not made the step. I think you should increase the price for one. Keep the price the same for two or more. That way you can have the best of both worlds. (Am I the only one who just heard Hannah Montana in my head?) You will still get what you need from the single-bottle sales, and you might get some others who see a bargain and share the HMM goodness with their friends! Softball moms like vodka…this I have learned. :)

  20. Kerri says:

Have you considered changing your shipping from the USPS to say Fedex? You could possibly get a small business rate, they pick up from your home and give you the supplies to ship with. It is something to think about. You will save on gas from trips to and from the USPS, plus the headaches that come with it. :)

    1. Hot Mess Mom says:

I have. It’s still double price:(. USPS picks up at my house.

  21. Trish B says:

I definitely say no to the 2 bottle minimum – i think that would exclude a lot of purchasers. But i do think a discount per bottle would be great when you order two or more. People like me like a good deal – so I would end up with two anyway. but there are a bunch of people that I bet wouldn’t buy any because they only wanted one!

  22. Anne says:

I say 1 for 17.50, and the more you order the less the price. I gave the 3 I bought as gifts, and my friends loved them. I put them in a christmas bag with 2 mini bottles of vodka (the two min bottles fit inside perfectly) and two small cranberry juices. They think I’m a great friend, and very thoughtful as well. I think the price is great, and I got to spread some cheer!! Merry Christmas!!!

  23. Abbie says:

I would go with raising the price on one bottle. $17.50 is still very reasonable and I find that when I’m told I HAVE to buy a certain amount of something, I’m turned off from buying any.

    Good luck!

  24. krissylou says:

I’m smacking myself for only buying 1 – I bought it for someone else, but obviously I had to keep it for myself. Now I’m short a fun gift for someone – I ain’t givin’ mine up!

Raise the price of each bottle. Makes it easier.

  25. Up the price to the $17.50. Give a price break at two or three if you feel it is feasible for the finances, and the workload. I myself want one but I haven’t shopped for anything for myself since we got custody of the kids. (Just trying to get back on top of things and I am a crazy budget bitch, so I tend to cut myself off first) And I would get them either way (and will eventually, I got a budget breather coming up and I am gonna spend it on the adults in the house not the kids for once). There is always going to be someone who complains but you got to keep things in the Black when doing business, and your time, effort, and frustration all have cost too. So I would raise the price, if feasible run some quantity discounts, let the haters hate and not worry about it. You can’t burn yourself out, and let the books run toward red just to make people happy. But I think whatever you decide is good, and the fact that you are asking in the first place means you care about your customers, if they think it’s too expensive or complain if you choose a min order, you have lots more that won’t. Either way your doing it right!!

  26. Jill says:

If 70% of your orders are for single bottles, I would say definetly just raise the price to 17.50, it seems to make more sense if that’s what most of your orders are…I’m one of those people who only want to buy one, and I would pay the extra 2 dollars, and probably wouldn’t buy any if I had to get 2. (Even though they’re awesome!) hope I helped :-) and I can’t wait to get one of the bottles after the holidays when I have more money. I just found your blog recently and I literally laugh out loud at work. Thanks!

  27. Amy Dyane says:

I bought one after the new girl at work showed me hers. I also bought koozies and a wine bottle bag. I eanted to make sure the bottle was good before I gave as gifts. You should raise the price and do a price break at 3. (that’s how many I’ll be ordering after Christmas) That’s my opinion. ;)

  28. Sewing Sister says:

Raise the price AND offer the twofer. I would totally buy it at the higher price – have been eyeing that bottle for like 6 weeks, but saving it as a treat for myself when I lose that last 10 pounds. A Tervis Tumbler of that size is like $20. But if it seems too high for one, maybe someone else would think the twofer price more palatable. These bottles crack me up. My soccer mom friends and I, who are actually ski bums in disguise, totally fill water bottles with vodka for those heinous all-weekend tournaments. Been doing it for years. This is like hiding in plain sight. So love it!

  29. Amanda says:

1 for $17.50 or 2 for $30. If I saw that pricing I would just buy 2 because it’s cheaper. I have done it before specifically on water bottles/beverage containers. You can never have enough. I have also NOT purchased a set of water bottles because the 2 pack was cheaper than the single but they didn’t have the colors I wanted in the 2 pack.

  30. Jade says:

I don’t think that $17.50 is a horrible price for the sheer AWESOMENESS of that water bottle. I myself have been scooping them out for awhile now…I have also told all my friends about them. In fact yesterday at work I was talking to one of my co workers about how awesome they were and how I needed one. I asked if she thought I could get away with using it at work. (I mean I do work in a liquor store after all) She said she loved the idea, but someone would eventually probably get a stick up their A$$ about it. I told her probably, But ‘F’ them it’s my bottle :) I think the store manger would chuckle about it. OKay enough on that random tangent. Like I said I do not believe $17.50 is an unreasonable price at all…with that being said though, I am one of those people that no matter how much I WANT WANT WANT something I can usually talk myself out of buying it if it’s for myself. Especially since I’ve had my boys. I don’t think you should have a minimum order though, I agree with the other ladies in the fact that you will get more grief then what it is worth. If you can I would give a discount though on more then 3 bottles. Because as much as I have a hard time spending money on myself, spending money on love ones is a different story. I can really see these bottles being popular as bridesmaid gifts, book club gifts, ‘play date’ gifts :) So being able to give a discount on the more you order I think will really sell it to the people looking for a good ‘deal’ or a bargain as silly as that sounds. I mean I know I will buy more then I intended if I was getting a ‘deal’ like free shipping…or so much off your purchase… Like I said might seem silly, but it is what it is.

I think that no matter what choice you make you will have no problem selling these AWESOME bottles. It was actually because I saw one of your bottles on Pinterest (and repinned it of course) that I first found your blog and started following you on here and FB.

    1. Hot Mess Mom says:

awesome. thanks so much for the input! and put yourself first for 5 minutes and get a damn bottle! think of how much joy it will bring you ;)

  31. Shynook11 says:

I agree 17.50 for one…. is best business decision….with minimal discount for 2. or more. Happy Holidays. Enjoy your Hot Mess vacation…you have def. earned it.

  32. Tristan says:

I am the kind of person who stands in the diaper line cursing the diaper gods for the 50 cent price hike although the packaging is now three diapers short… Until my child decides shitting herself is not the cool thing to do, I have to buy them. If I decide to splurge for myself, it is for ME only, my inner Jew would buy one for a slightly higher margin because I don’t NEED two. It’s not that I don’t love my friends and want to shower them with gifts, but if I argue with myself over buying a pair of $20 shoes when the ones I am wearing have holes in them, but my kid got the frickin iPad for babies…. I’m only buying one. Because otherwise I am selfish. It’s messed up in the head, I know. But I know being a one-woman show is tough, and I don’t have my own blog or store… Slap that $2.50 on there and I will order one.

  33. Amanda S. says:

Just found your blog through a pintrest post with a photo of this bottle. I plan on buying one for a friend of mine. It will be the PERFECT bday gift. I would rather pay more for 1 than have to purchase 2.

  34. Briana says:

I agree with raising the price on an individual bottle. I would rather pay more for one than have to purchase two. But, I am not your market, my redneck side only drinks cheap wines, my mexican side only drinks beer and tequila. :)

  35. Mimi says:

I just discovered your amazing blog a few weeks ago and have been trying to make my way through all of your posts when I have time! I love it. I couldn’t figure out how to privately email you this, but I saw this link selling “there’s a chance this is vodka” coffe mugs on Pinterest. I’m not sure of the full details of your copyright agreement but from what I’ve read so far on your blog, I thought you may want to be aware of it. Who knows, maybe it’s your shop that’s selling them but I just trying to look out for ya!

    1. Hot Mess Mom says:

thank you. My attorney is working with them on a cease and desist. thank you! and you can always email me at ;)
