Do little boys like anything more than bunk beds?

I think one of my biggest failures as a mother of boys is that my boys don’t have bunk beds.  I love them.  I couldn’t wait for my kids to get them, however since my boys were so close in age, they each had to move to a ‘big boy’ bed at 18 months so I could use the crib for the next baby.  Obviously I couldn’t put an 18 month old in a bunk bed, so I bought very cute captains beds.

As they years went by and  I kept looking for bunk beds, one of two things would happen.  A) I wouldn’t have the money to replace perfectly good beds or B) I would have the money, find the perfect bed, and Number Three would have some crazy accident, be covered in blood and I would decide no way I could give that child anything else to fall off of.

Now, the little ones are 8 & 9.  Have I missed the window?  Do I want to buy bunk beds for kids who will be teenagers in 4 years?  They want them terribly.  You know how much we travel. When we rent houses, the boys almost always have a bunk room.   I have decided that other than catching frogs, farting and rolling in mud, there is nothing boys like better than playing on bunk beds.  My boys can stay in the room for hours just climbing, laying and talking to each other in bunk beds.  Something about having a sibling under or on top of them, makes them want to whisper and share secrets.  It’s awesome.

I think I’m going to have to do it.  Maybe I can find some that can convert to lofts in a few years.  I’m on the hunt for some kick-ass and comfortable bunk beds.

What about you?  Do your kids have bunk beds?  WILL your kids have bunk beds?  I cannot be alone in my obsession of ladders and “sleeping on top” can I?

I have one and I am dying to get him into an elevated bed or whatever they call it since he (we) doesn’t need a bb. :( I want to put a desk under his bed though. But my vote is if you can do it financially- do it.

My sister and I had bunk beds. It was awesome. There was so much room for us to have step class and other activities.

  3. Oh the joys of raising boys close in age. I say if those little rascals want to sleep in bunk beds so they can giggle and talk all night, I say go for it! I’m sure they’ll be fine and not fall out of the top bunk. You’re darn tootin’ my FOUR boys all share bunks! It just warms my heart to hear them playing and laughing together in beds. Thank you HMM for posing the question I’ve known for years. There really is nothing little boys love more than bunk beds. Sweet Dreams.

You are not alone! I always wanted one as a kid and had to hide the excitement when my husband suggested getting one for our son’s room. If you still want to get one for your sons, I say go for it, just check the weight limit.

We have bunk beds though no one sleeps on the bottom. I got them on craigslist for $100!

Got one for the girls. They spend a lot of time hanging and climbing on that bed. Good times to be had for sure. Check Craigslist for some smokin deals

    Zzzzzzz…..
Just imagine having to put them back together after number one pulls a walrus move on the top bunk. “if this bunk is rockin….Walrus must be in it”.

we bought them for the girls when we moved here… they just HAD to have them. they hated them. yellow uses the double bed that was on bottom, and we moved the upper part into the playroom (so it’s now used as a fort).
for us, it was a $1400 mistake.
for that reason, i would buy them (it?) used (or just take mine. :-)
    but what do i know?

totally get em, if they still want em! My kids are 2 & 4 and they sleep together every now and again even though they have their own rooms and beds. I’ve been debating about getting bunk beds and converting the other room into a playroom/office. How young is too young though?

My husband ran across a set of solid maple bunks at a yard sale a year ago. $90! Sure we had to scrape off some stickers and there are still lovely penned sentiments in random places, but my two younger boys adore their bunks. #1 is a little jealous, but he has a captains bed and doesn’t complain too much.

If you can find them, I’d get twin XL or full size bunks, and make sure that they can be separated into two individual beds. When we first got our bunks, we used them as two twins because #3 was only 2 and couldn’t be trusted. LOL Not that he’s anymore trustworthy at age 3…but the smaller bedroom kind of forced our hand.

Bunk beds are always cool. ALWAYS.

  12. Jen says:

My kids are over them and they are 11 and 13.

  13. I’m looking into bunkbeds myself soon. Like you, I had a small age gap between my youngest two and at just 2 years old my son was still in his cot bed when the baby was born. She co-slept for 6 months (still does really) and he now has a big boy bed… thinking we will get bunk beds next year for the little ones to share a room. They are fun. I had them when I was a kid and yes, I fell out, but it was still fun! :)

We have 3 sets of bunkbeds in our house, and could seriously use another set. How else can you pack in all their gear and and still have floor space. Our littlest one is 5 and we’ve never had any accidents (six boys)

    1. Bridget says:

SIX BOYS?!?!? Hot Mess Mom II !!! :-)

  15. Ali says:

I personally love them because they save a ton of space!

I hate them because they are a pain in the ass to make! I would make Monster and Bug do it…but the OCD would just make me do it over again.

    I say get them!

My boys are 17 months apart and I actually bought bunk beds, which have never been bunked as number 2 is much like your number 3, always getting into a crazy accident (we have our own nurse at the pedes ER) and I couldn’t give him anything else to jump off of. I dream of one day being able to bunk the beds without injury.

  17. Chrissy says:

Get one that you can ‘unstack’ so that when they are done with them, you can keep the beds. I have the twin over full and chris loves it, so does his little sister.

  18. Our twin boys got bunks last year. They were 8.5 years old and still love them!! They trade every single night for who gets the top.

  19. Still bored. says:

    I’m so over this conversation…

  20. Sarah Barah says:

I’m with you! Always wanted to have bunk beds for my kids some day…I always felt a little neglected for not having them in my childhood :) My wee one is only 13 months and I know it’s a long way off but I’m glad I read your post…can’t miss the window! Luckily we have a convertible crib and no plans to have another for at least another year. Have you tried craigslist, kijiji or a used furniture store..just for the frame? That might save yah some dough if it’s only going to be for a few years.
