And NOW I’m a couponer. Sort of.

Coupons.  Coupons make me crazy.  I am not a fan.  I mean, I WANT to be a fan.. I WANT to use coupons..I WANT to save money.. but I’m just not that organized.  The idea of sitting at the kitchen table with the Sunday paper and a pair of scissors gives me anxiety.   The times that I have actually attempted to clip coupons, I wind up “saving money” on products that I would never normally buy, therefore don’t normally use, therefore waste $5 in order to “save” $2.

That all being said, I have three boys.  Three big, hungry, disgusting boys.  My weekly grocery bill is over $300 and that doesn’t include alcohol!  I do my best to shop “BOGO” specials when available, and normally see about a 15% savings on my receipt.  I thought I was doing pretty good.  Apparently I was wrong.

My friends and neighbors are couponers.  They “tsk tsk” me in the check-out line.  “There was a coupon for that!  And for that!  And for THAT! ”  I roll my eyes and tell them to shut it… I’m too busy to worry about coupons.  I’m too busy to save money…  Wait… WHAT?  Too busy to save money??  Well, crap.’

As you are aware, Hot Mess Mom is NOT a coupon site… clearly.  However, after being contacted by Grocery Coupon Network, I agreed to check it out.  Take it for a test drive, if you will.

Holy shit y’all!  I am totally saving money!  Like, REAL money!!  And here’s the deal…  with literally 10 minutes on my laptop and a few printed pages, I have a grocery list (which I’m terrible at), somewhat of a meal plan (which I’m terrible at), and I’m totally saving money on products that I actually NEED and USE!   And I’m just dorky enough to be excited about it enough to use lots of exclamation points!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here’s the deal… I’m not going to explain it all to you because the GCN website has incredible information, tutorials, videos, etc.  I’m not that extreme.  I don’t have a coupon binder.  I’m not writing down dates and doubling up coupons.  I’m simply saving money on items that I would normally buy.

In addition to the manufacturers coupons, it allows me to access my grocery store’s weekly flyer, choose items directly from the flyer, and ADD THEM TO A LIST which I can then print directly from the site!  Are you hearing me?  I can MAKE A GROCERY LIST based on the specials available at my grocery store!   AND GCN has a “ weekly match up” category where I can chose my own store and it will show me other coupons to go with their weekly specials and the net price of each item!!!   Is this what grown-ups do??  Are people really this organized?  It’s amazing.   And, I cannot believe I’m saying this… I really can’t…  but it’s kinda fun…

And check THIS out!  After I make my grocery list, it prints out, gives me the AISLE of each item and what the “deal” is!!  Look.. it’s right here: publix list .AND I can do the same at Target and it sends the list right to my phone!  First time EVER I’ve walked out of Target without spending and extra $150 on “things” because I go in there without a plan.

So, bottom line.. on my very first attempt at couponing…  I spent about 20 minutes online, went to both Publix and Target, spent $400 and SAVED $175.  I think I know how people turn into to “crazy couponers”… I swear it’s a rush!!   God, I’m a dork.

Isn’t that how coupons are supposed to be? Easy ways to save a bit of money? I don’t know when all the fanatics made it seem like hard work but you do seem to have found an easier way of doing it. Yay you! My gran used to collect food stamps and I used to help her stick them in her book, those were the days … :)
